Concrete Pool Surrounds - Sunshine Coast

Pool Surrounds That Work as Hard as They Look

A concrete pool surround takes more punishment than almost any other surface on your property. It’s walked on wet, sat on in direct Queensland sun, splashed with chlorinated water daily, and expected to look great for decades. Getting it right means more than choosing a colour — it means specifying the right concrete strength, the right surface texture for barefoot safety, and working with a concreter who understands how pool surrounds behave long-term.

At Rawcon Concrete, we’ve been laying concrete pool surrounds across the Sunshine Coast since 1985. We work alongside pool builders, landscape designers, and homeowners to deliver surrounds that are engineered for safety, finished to a premium standard, and built to last in Queensland’s coastal and subtropical conditions.

Pool Surround Finishes – Sunshine Coast

Exposed Aggregate Pool Surrounds
Our most popular recommendation for pool surrounds on the Sunshine Coast — and for good reason. The textured aggregate surface provides excellent grip when wet, stays cooler underfoot than polished or plain concrete in direct sun, and offers an impressive visual finish that complements both contemporary and coastal landscaping. Available in a wide range of stone types and colour oxides to complement your pool interior, paving, and home exterior.

Plain Broomed Concrete
A broomed finish is the most affordable and most practical choice for pool surrounds — the fine texture provides reliable slip resistance and is easy to clean. Plain concrete can also be tinted with a colour oxide for a warmer or more neutral tone without the cost of full exposed aggregate.

Coloured Concrete
Integral colour oxide mixed throughout the concrete pour — not a surface coating — gives a consistent, fade-resistant tone across the entire surround. Popular in warm charcoals, sandstones, and earthy tones that absorb less heat than darker colours.

Honed Concrete Pool Surrounds
A smooth honed or ground finish suits contemporary architectural pool designs. Note: honed finishes require a surface sealer with a non-slip additive for safe use around pools — we specify and apply the correct treatment as part of the job.

What Makes a Good Concrete Pool Surround?

Not all pool surrounds are created equal. The ones that crack, stain, or become dangerously slippery within a few years almost always share the same root causes – and none of them are inevitable with the right concreter.

Correct strength specification. Pool surrounds on the Sunshine Coast should use a minimum of 32MPa concrete, stronger than a standard driveway, due to the combination of chemical exposure, thermal movement, and high foot traffic. Reinforcement. F72 steel mesh as a minimum, with careful attention to cover depth to prevent steel corrosion in chlorine-exposed environments. Expansion joints. Properly placed and detailed control joints manage the inevitable thermal movement in a large slab, preventing random cracking. Drainage. A correct cross-fall (typically 1:80 away from the pool edge) ensures water drains away efficiently and doesn’t pond against the pool coping or house. Surface texture. A slip-resistant finish is not optional — it’s a safety and liability requirement. We specify the appropriate surface treatment for each finish type.
